2009 Daytime Emmy Nominations

May 14th, 2009

The 2009 Daytime Emmy nominations are out and I have to say I am absolutely shocked by them.  SHOCKED!  There are some additions that are very welcome indeed and there are some omissions that are so ludicrous, it’s almost as if it’s a joke they are not there.  Let’s get to it!

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS
Debbi Morgan (Angie, AMC) - ABC
Maura West (Carly, ATWT) - CBS
Susan Flannery (Stephanie, B&B) - CBS
Susan Haskell (Marty, OLTL) - ABC
Jeanne Cooper (Katherine, Y&R) - CBS

I picked Flannery and Cooper.  I still believe Cooper will win.  There are no actresses from GH, which is a shock.  I thought that at least Sarah Brown (Claudia) would receive a nomination.  Her work is always stellar regardless of writing or storyline.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR
Thorsten Kaye (Zach, AMC) - ABC
Peter Reckell (Bo, DAYS) - NBC
Anthony Geary (Luke, GH) - ABC
Daniel Cosgrove (Bill, GL) - CBS
Christian LeBlanc (Michael, Y&R) - CBS

I picked Geary and LeBlanc.  The very nice surprise here is a lead actor nomination for Peter Reckell.  For years, DOOL  has been left out of the Emmy acting nods.  It is truly great to see them back in and Reckell deserves to be there.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Melissa Claire Egan (Annie, AMC) - ABC
Alicia Mishew (Kendall, AMC) - ABC
Julie Pinson (Janet, ATWT) - CBS
Tamara Braun (Ava, DAYS) - NBC
Bree Williamson (Jessica, OLTL) - ABC

I picked only Williamson in this category.  I am surprised by Braun’s nomination.  Not because she wasn’t good in the role, but it was so short-lived.  And again not one actress from GH in the bunch.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR
Vincent Irrizary (David, AMC) - ABC
Jacob Young (JR, AMC)- ABC
Van Hansis (Luke, ATWT) - CBS
Bradford Anderson (Spinelli, GH) - ABC
Jeff Branson (Shayne, GL) - CBS

I picked Irrizary and Branson here.  I am not surprised by any of the nominees here.  They were all outstanding.  I would have loved to have seen Tuc Watkins (David-OLTL) on the list though.

OUTSTANDING YOUNGER ACTRESS
Meredith Hagner (Liberty, ATWT) - CBS
Rachel Melvin (Chelsea, DOOL) - NBC
Kirsten Storms (Maxie, GH) - ABC
Julie Berman (Lulu, GH) - ABC
Emily O’Brien (Jana, Y&R) - CBS

In this category I picked Melvin, Storms, and Berman.  I am surprised to see Meredith Hagner here instead of say Kristen Alderson (Starr-OLTL).  But overall, a pretty good list.

OUTSTANDING YOUNGER ACTOR
Cornelius Smith, Jr (Frankie, AMC) - ABC
Darin Brooks (Max, DOOL) - NBC
Blake Berris (Nick, DOOL) - NBC
EJ Bonilla (Rafe, GL) - CBS
Bryton McClure (Devon, Y&R) - CBS

I picked Brooks and Bonilla.  Very glad to see the DOOL nominees, but think that Edward Alderson (Matthew-OLTL) should have been on instead of Bryton.

Now for the shocks!

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES WRITING TEAM
ALL MY CHILDREN
BOLD & BEAUTIFUL
GENERAL HOSPITAL
ONE LIFE TO LIVE

Seriously, you have got to be kidding.  I will give you B&B, but OLTL and AMC instead of Y&R?!  There’s no way those two are written better than Y&R.  None.  It’s absolutely ridiculous.

And perhaps the most shocking category of all:

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
ALL MY CHILDREN
DAYS OF OUR LIVES
THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL

I am all for DOOL being recognized more but outstanding drama series??!!  Not a chance it deserves to be here.  No Y&R?! The number 1 show in daytime television and not here?! It’s really ridiculous.  AMC over GH?  Now, I am NOT a fan of GH, but it certainly outperformed AMC over the past year.  I truly am not sure what voters are basing their choices on this category.  B&B, okay, but no Y&R….it’s just shocking.

It will be interesting to see who wins on August 30.  Next week, I will post my own picks for who will take home the statue.  Leave me a comment here and tell me who you think will win and what you think of the nominees!

Turn Out The Light

April 4th, 2009

reva

By Deborah Horton

After 72 years on radio and TV, CBS has pulled the plug on Guiding Light.  In September, the show will officially leave network TV and the soap opera genre will be forever changed.  Millions of fans will lose a treasured escape and millions more will face the new era of network TV without soaps.

For 72 years, Guiding Light has provided its fans with stories of family, of faith, of love, and of tribulations.  The light has burned long in the hearts of millions of viewers and it is truly a sad day that the end is near.  For millions of fans, the city of Springfield was like a second home.  The characters had become like family.  The stories were burned into their memories for all time.  And now, the light is about to go dark.

The end of Guiding Light is not just the end of the longest running show of the genre it is quite possibly the end of soap operas on network TV.  Word has come that As The World Turns will meet the same fate next year.  Most savvy viewers know that NBC also wants out of the soap business and Days of Our Lives days are numbered as well.  That leaves the struggling bottom of the ABC soap lineup All My Children as the most likely next candidate to go.  And from there it’s just a matter of time before they are all gone.

Word has it that P&G, the owner of Guiding Light and As The World Turns, have been shopping both shows for possibly as much as a couple of months to various cable and online networks in the hopes of keeping the shows going in some format.  A purported deal with SoapNet for both shows fell through in March.  If SoapNet takes on any canceled soap it will be one which they already cover not ones they do not.  The online arena for soaps has not caught on, but for millions of fans it may require a real change in how they watch their soaps if they wish to keep watching them at all.

It’s a truly sad day for all soap viewers, not just those who have faithfully watched Guiding Light for so long.  Guiding Light was the forebearer of all soaps and as such every soap fan owes a little gratitude for how the show allowed all others to follow.   Turn out the light, but we as soap fans will keep it burning in our hearts and memories.

Emmy Blues

June 27th, 2008

The 2008 Emmy broadcast was by all accounts a complete ratings bust.  The show was one of the least watched if not THE least watched telecast in Daytime Emmy history.  I am not sure if it’s a reflection of the decline in daytime viewership or if it’s the telecast that’s at fault.

I have long been a believer that the Daytime Emmy broadcast should be broadcast in DAYTIME when the fans usually watch their shows.  People have such busy lives and even given the success of SoapNet, most people watch soaps still during the day.  With all the cable channels, there is just too much to choose from in primetime to broadcast the Emmy’s at that time.

Another thing that has hurt the Emmy broadcast is that the nomination procedures have reduced the nominees to multi-Emmy winners who are there on their name value and actors who don’t deserve to be in the running.  The fans watch the nominating process and become very disheartened that the truly deserving are overlooked year in and year out.   It is those same fans who don’t want to watch a broadcast filled with actors who they think shouldn’t even be in the running much less turn out to be the winners.

I’m not at all sure that my suggestions are the right ones to right the Daytime Emmy broadcast ship, but I do know that the networks won’t keep showing a ratings dog and advertisers won’t pay to support an ever sinking ship.  Changes need to be made and the sooner the better…for everyone.
